Beginning Poetry, Poetry Mentoring, Manuscript Review

I firmly believe in the craft of poetry: by studying craft, engaging with how craft is working in a poem, or and being open to how craft could work even harder, we get to be better poets.  It's a lifelong journey.  I will always tell you first and foremost what is working well in your poems -- 'admiring what is admirable', as the poet Galway Kinnell put it.  Constructive critique has to be just that: constructive, helping the poem to realize itself and helping the poet to grow in their confidence and voice.  I believe that as poets, we teach each other: I will also learn from our poetic conversations.

Beginning Poets

I love working with beginning poets.  I have developed a sequence of lessons to give you the basics of approaching poetry as a craft, including description, narration, concision, persona, and elements of figurative language. Each lesson includes critique of two new poems.  The charge is $110 per lesson.
